Dartmoor Golf Tour

Situated in the south west of England, right in the very heart of Devon, Dartmoor is a landscape of stunning views, awe inspiring granite tors, deep wooded valleys with fast flowing rivers, and rugged, wide open spaces. But Dartmoor also has three very special golf courses and, combined with two top quality hotels, this is a tour that offers outstanding value for money.

Tavistock Golf Club, situated on the western slopes of the Dartmoor National Park, an area of outstanding beauty. The golf course was established in 1890 and with continual updating and maintenance to the highest standards it offers a challenging test to golfers of all abilities.

With its wide fairways and sweeping vistas the course looks deceptively simply but its offers a challenging test for the unwary golfer.  Nature has provided its own hazards at Tavistock, with thick gorse and bracken, plus the odd clump of scrubby trees. There are also cunningly hidden bunkers that can trap the most proficient golfer. The thin soil not only provides tight lies, it also makes the greens lightning fast. Because of the thin soil the course and greens drain very quickly allowing year-long play -we seldom have need for temporary Greens or Tees at Tavistock due to the excellent drainage we have on the moor.

Yelverton Golf Club is a delightful moorland course, designed by Herbert Fowler, who used the old mine workings as natural hazards to challenge golfers of all standards. It has outstanding views across Dartmoor and over Cornwall and is a very natural course, with Dartmoor ponies and cattle sharing the fairways.

When the club was founded in 1904 there was a nine hole course to the west of the clubhouse. This was upgraded to eighteen holes in 1912. The current layout came into play between the wars. Today's course retains fifteen of the original holes, with 16, 17 and 18 as more recent additions. The course has played host to many top competitions, including The Men’s Senior Amateur Championships in 2006.

Finally the inland retreat of Bovey Castle provides an interesting contrast to the coastal tracks thanks to its setting in amongst the mature woodlands of Dartmoor National Park. Designed by RJ Abercromby to rival its sister courses at Gleneagles and Turnberry, Bovey Castles opened to great acclaim in 1930. The challenging, yet beautiful course meanders through the estate whilst the luxurious accommodation and five star facilities of the castle mean the resort is regarded as one of England’s most idyllic destinations to play golf.

“You could not find a more spectacular group of golf courses so conveniently located together in one of England’s most popular and jaw-droppingly, glorious coastal locations,” comments Andrew Cooke, CEO & founder of Golf Tourism England.

South Devon can be easily accessed by car via the M5 whilst visitors from northern England, Scotland, Ireland and Europe (including France, Holland, Spain, Portugal and Italy) can reach the county by air via direct flights into the international airport at Exeter.
